Saint Stephen Gregory Church

oldest armenian church in hamedan

The Armenians of Isfahan, as well as Armenian merchants and immigrants from Russia, built Stephanos church, the oldest church in Hamedan, in 1676 AD at the time of Shah Suleiman of Persia. The background story is that during World War I, thousands of Armenians from Western Armenia took refuge in western Iranian cities such as Kermanshah and Hamedan. After settling down, they decided to make the place more like home; so the first essential place that they needed was a church, a place to keep their religion.

It was built in 1908, according to the stony plate set on the entrance of the seminary, the first Pahlavi period. The current structure is the expanded form of the first one, built by the efforts of Haroutioun Mesrobian Priest (sorry in advance for any misspelling) in 1936, and has a temple, auditorium, and a school (an educational and worship place for Armenian). The previous church was small and after the number of Armenian raised in the city, they expanded it.

Cantor Church

One of the smallest churches in Iran

It is the smallest Orthodox church in Iran which was built in 1905 A.D for the Russians engineers and staff, hired for road constructions in Qazvin in Qajar era. The church has a small yard with two graves in it. One of the graves belongs to a Russian war pilot whose plane went down during the First World War near Qazvin, and the other one is the resting place of a Russian engineer who was working as a road construction engineer at the time.
