Geographical location of Mausoleum of Baba Taher
Hamedan is the historic capital of Iran and the town full of gates. There are lots of monuments and spots inside of it and this mausoleum is one of the best. This mausoleum located on the top of a small hill at the northwest of Hamedan, and in front of the Alvand Summit, Iran. There are a few steps to reach this masterpiece.
History and culture of Mausoleum of Baba Taher
Baba Taher was among the great poets in Iran. He was born in 1000 AD and lived his mysterious life in Hamedan and died there. "Baba", was his most famous title and it means preceptor, and "Oryan" the second title refers to avoiding secular interests.
There is nothing left from his parents. Near to his glorious tomb, there is a grave named "Fatemeh Lari" that some say she's his nanny, others say she's his lover or sister.
Most of us know Baba Taher for his two-couplet, an ancient form of Persian poetry, which was easy to understand. Discerning divine love from temporal in his masterpieces is difficult and it's what made them unique. Reading his poets here will help you know him very well.
This building has stood ahead of numerous demolitions and reconstructions during different centuries. In the sixth century, an octagonal break tower was built on Baba Taher grave which was destroyed overtimes. During the first Pahlavi Dynasty, the Hamedan Municipality built a new building instead of the old one, which its materials were mostly brick. During this reconstruction, a valuable tile from the seventh century AH, which is now kept in the National Museum of Iran, was discovered. On this turquoise tile, verses of the Holy Quran are written in prominent Kufic script.
The new tomb is a unique and original masterpiece of modern architecture. The main design of it is a combination of architecture of the seventh and eighth centuries AH and the present era. The new building, built-in 1344 by the efforts of the Society for the National Heritage of Iran and the Hamedan Municipality by Engineer Mohsen Foroughi. Also, a large green space is built around the new building.
There are some other graves of poets and preceptors of Hamedan Province adjacent to the Baba Taher grave.
Another tomb of Baba Taher is located in Khorramabad, Lorestan province, Iran. Baba Taher used Luri words and expressions in his poems and the people of Lorestan consider this as a reason for Baba Taher to be Lurish. The people of Lorestan attribute the word "Baba" to the mentors, and this is another reason why they say Baba Taher was from Lorestan. The tomb of Baba Taher in Khorramabad, belongs to the Khwarazmian dynasty, is located in the center of Khorramabad city and east of the Falakolaflak Citadel in a neighborhood called Darb e Baba Taher.
Architecture of Mausoleum of Baba Taher
In the architecture of this attractive building is Mohsen Foroughi, who is an educated person in architecture, knows modern architecture very well, and is enamored by Iranian art and architecture. His architecture is a combination of inspiration of Iranian culture and architecture and world-class innovation. The façade of the mausoleum is similar to the old one in Iran and made of concrete.
The Mausoleum of Baba Taher is located in the center of a verdurous and adorable square in Hamedan Province. The turquoise conical doom and amazing roof tiling inside will attract you.
The walls of the tomb are isosceles triangles that lead your eye to the sky. This is a preparation that the creative architect has used to express the place where is on the ascension.
The area of this building, despite the sharp angles that induce height to us, seems relatively small. The combination of components of this place spread tranquility; here is a suitable place for eternal peace.
The mausoleum is located on an octagonal base, which is 35.20 meters high from the upper surface of the hill, and 30.25 meters from the street. The octagonal columns of the tower, the tombstone, the floor, and the steps of the tomb are made of granite, and the main building is covered with a set of prisms and have light pores.
The façade and the carpet of the mausoleum are made of stone and there are tiled inscriptions inside.
Inside of the mausoleum, there are two-couplet of Baba Taher poems written on 24 pieces of marble. Also, there are two brass plaques inside which one of them shows the names of people from the society for the National Heritage of Iran who was effective during building the mausoleum, and the other shows the great names of those buried next to Baba Taher. The total area of the basis of the mausoleum and its garden is estimated at 8965 square meters.
Tips and ideas
In the interior part of the mausoleum, there is a small book store where you can find historical books and buy small clay sculpture as a souvenir. Also, during the Nowroz holidays, there will be many small shops that together turn to a little bazaar where handicrafts and souvenirs of Hamedan and other cities can be found.
